Video Summary
The Essentials of Family Medicine CME featured four presentations for primary care clinicians. Attendees were directed to online materials and the on-demand recording, and reminded to complete the evaluation to receive a certificate of completion; CME credit will be submitted on their behalf.

Dr. Shirley Sharpe introduced travel medicine, emphasizing pre-travel risk assessment, vaccine and malaria-prophylaxis planning, use of CDC resources such as the Yellow Book, and prevention counseling. She also reviewed illnesses to consider when patients return, including malaria, dengue, and travelers’ diarrhea.

Dr. Darren Wanamaker reviewed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progression from fat accumulation to inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. He discussed risk factors, evaluation—including the FIB-4 score—and lifestyle measures and treatments that may help reduce risk.

Dr. Eric Zerandi covered knee anatomy, history and examination, common special tests, and injuries such as ligament and meniscal tears, osteoarthritis, and overuse conditions. He highlighted conservative management, appropriate imaging, referral decisions, and the importance of considering referred pain from the hip.

Dr. Stephanie Phillips discussed chronic fatigue and long COVID, including diagnostic criteria, evaluation for alternative causes, and supportive approaches such as pacing, sleep and lifestyle measures, and selected therapies.

Dr. Urania Davis focused on teaching students to manage sensitive encounters with female patients. She recommended preparing students and patients beforehand, explaining student roles clearly, respecting patient preferences, and building learner confidence through graduated participation and supportive supervision.
