Video Summary
The symposium’s final day covered adolescent mental health, care for people with Down syndrome, menopause, and communication across generations.

Dr. Jessica Gendorski discussed rising mental health concerns among teens and the stress of transitioning to college or work. She emphasized early screening, recognizing changes in behavior, and the protective value of a trusted adult. Rather than responding to academic or personal struggles with punishment, adults can help teens identify emotions, solve problems, maintain healthy routines, and use effective coping strategies. Families should also learn about college mental health resources before a crisis occurs.

Dr. Mary Stephens reviewed primary care for adolescents and adults with Down syndrome. She highlighted the importance of person-first, individualized care; avoiding ableism and diagnostic overshadowing; and monitoring issues such as thyroid disease, vision and hearing problems, sleep apnea, heart disease, gastrointestinal conditions, and mental health changes. She also stressed planning for the transition from school-based services to adult care and supporting patients’ decision-making.

Dr. Karen Tang explained that menopause can affect sleep, cognition, mood, joints, sexual health, and body composition—not only cause hot flashes. Treatment decisions should be individualized and based on evidence, age, timing, symptoms, and personal risk. Shared decision-making helps distinguish realistic benefits of hormone therapy from claims circulating on social media.

Dr. Marcine McCron Davis explored generational differences in healthcare and the workplace. She encouraged clinicians to adapt communication to patients’ preferences while avoiding stereotypes, and to build trust through clear explanations, empathy, and collaboration.
