Video Summary
The presentation reviewed non-opioid pain medications and emphasized using them first to reduce unnecessary opioid exposure. For acute pain, CDC guidance recommends non-pharmacologic options and non-opioid drugs first because they are often just as effective and have fewer short-term side effects. Common acute pain treatments include acetaminophen and NSAIDs, especially for musculoskeletal injuries, headaches, dental pain, and minor surgeries. For subacute and chronic pain, non-pharmacologic therapy remains first-line, followed by topical or oral NSAIDs, duloxetine, or other adjuvants depending on the pain type. Neuropathic pain often responds better to SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentin, pregabalin, capsaicin, or lidocaine patches. The talk also reviewed major risks: acetaminophen hepatotoxicity at high doses, and NSAID GI, renal, and cardiovascular toxicity, especially with long-term use or in older patients.
