Video Summary
The webinar introduced Mental Health First Aid, presented by Dr. Jay Lee, and explained how it helps address the widespread mental health crisis in the United States. Dr. Lee shared statistics showing that about one in five U.S. adults has a mental illness, with young adults especially affected, yet less than half receive treatment. He emphasized the serious consequences of untreated mental illness, including suicide risk, disability, high costs, and reduced life expectancy.

Mental Health First Aid was described as initial support given to someone developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis, until professional help is available. It is not a replacement for therapy or medical care, but a way to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and connect people to resources. The program uses the ALGEE action plan: Assess risk, Listen nonjudgmentally, Give reassurance, Encourage professional help, and Encourage self-help/support.

The training covers depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders, with special attention to suicide awareness, stigma reduction, and using respectful language. Dr. Lee also highlighted the recovery-oriented philosophy behind the program and noted that Mental Health First Aid is available in adult, youth, Spanish, and other specialized versions.
