Video Summary
The webinar focused on identifying and supporting medical students who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, burnout, or other distress. Ruth Conboy explained that medical students face significant pressures, including exams, rotations, residency applications, finances, unclear expectations, and personal responsibilities. Warning signs may include sleep changes, poor concentration, low motivation, disorganization, social withdrawal, unrealistic worry, decreased self-care, irritability, or unprofessional behavior. She stressed that preceptors should not diagnose students, but should notice concerning changes and connect them with help.

Leanne Henry Miller emphasized creating a help-seeking culture through clear expectations, consistent feedback, compassion, and normalizing stress. She discussed how anxiety, social discomfort, perfectionism, and fear of stigma can prevent students from asking for help. She urged supervisors to trust their instincts, address concerns early, and refer students when safety or serious impairment is present.

The presenters highlighted available resources, including PCOM counseling services, CareBridge telehealth counseling, and the Wellbeing Index, a brief anonymous screening tool with built-in resources. They concluded by encouraging preceptors to foster open, welcoming environments that support student wellbeing and patient safety.
