Video Summary
The webinar provided Pennsylvania physicians with an overview of the organ and tissue donation process, fulfilling the state’s mandated two-hour education requirement. Speakers emphasized that donation concerns every specialty and that clinicians can help prevent missed opportunities while supporting patients and families with clarity and compassion.

Organ procurement organizations (OPOs) evaluate potential donors, coordinate family discussions and recovery, and provide bereavement support. Clinicians should promptly contact their OPO when a ventilated or ECMO-supported patient has a potentially nonrecoverable injury or illness—ideally before end-of-life discussions—and notify the OPO of significant clinical changes or planned withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. After any hospital death, the OPO should also be contacted to assess tissue-donation potential. Donation conversations should be planned and led by the OPO, ideally in partnership with the care team.

Presenters explained donation after brain death and donation after circulatory death, and reviewed donor management strategies to preserve organ function, including maintaining perfusion, oxygenation, temperature, and electrolyte balance. The brain-death presentation covered prerequisites, clinical examination, apnea testing, ancillary testing, and the importance of following current guidelines and hospital policy.

The webinar also stressed accurate, plain-language communication. Families need time, repeated explanations, and clear understanding of prognosis and death. Donation must not drive goals-of-care decisions, and comfort-focused care should remain compassionate and patient-centered. Timely referrals, coordinated teamwork, and family support are central to honoring donor wishes and helping save lives.
