Dialectical Therapy: An Applied Overview

Speaker: Amy Hoch, PsyD, Director of Wellness Center, Rowan University

This 3-hour presentation will provide an overview of the theoretical foundations and evidence base of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), including acceptance, change, and dialectical strategies. Participants will engage in experiential practice with behavioral chain analysis and the five DBT skill modules (i.e., distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and walking the middle path). Special attention will be given to the transdiagnostic efficacy of DBT and its application with clients who have PTSD. Content is grounded in current peer- reviewed research, including randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, and studies examining mechanisms of change, with an emphasis on translating evidence-based principles into effective clinical practice.

Amy Hoch, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York. She is the Director of the Wellness Center at Rowan University, where she oversees operations of counseling, health, pet therapy, and EMS services. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she provides individual and group therapy to students and supervises and trains faculty, staff, and students on a variety of topics, including trauma, DBT, RODBT, and mindfulness. Dr. Hoch is trained in a variety of treatments, including Trauma Focused, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), DBT for PTSD, and Radically Open DBT. Dr. Hoch is a certified trauma-focused CBT trainer and provides training, consultation, and supervision on trauma-related issues both nationally and internationally. She is a designated Senior Clinician in RODBT and also provides one-day training in this treatment model.
Full attendance is required to receive CE credit for each session. No partial credits are available. All participants must sign an attestation regarding attendance and indicate the type of CE credit they require through a link that will be provided following the session. At the conclusion of each session, participants will receive an additional link to complete an evaluation survey; we request that you take a few minutes to provide anonymous feedback.
